What kinds of posts should I write to get morelinks and traffic?

It’s a question everyblogger asks themselves. Below you will find 20 different types of blog poststhat seem to work wonders on social media while also generating a lot ofgrassroots in-bound links.

1. Instructional – Instructional posts tell people how to do something. These tendto be the most popular both in the short term (ie loyal readers love them andwill link up to them) but also in the longer term (ie one of the reasons peoplesearch the web is to find out how todo things and if you can rank highly with your tips post you can have trafficover a length of time).

2. Informational – Thisis one of the more common blog posttypes where you simply give information on a topic. It could be a definitionpost or a longer explanation of some aspect of the niche that you’re writingon.

3. Reviews – Another highly searchedfor term on the web is ‘review’ – Clientsconsidering buying a new product head to Google and search for a review on itfirst. Reviews come in all shapes and sizes and on virtually every product orservice you can think of. Give your fair and insightful opinion and ask readersfor their opinion – reviews can be highly powerful posts that have a great longevity.

4. Lists – One of the easiest waysto write a post is to make a list. Posts with content like ‘The Top Ten ways to….’, ‘7 Reasons why….’ ‘ 5 Favorite ….’, ‘53 mistakesthat bloggers make when….’ are not only easy to write but are usually verypopular with readers and with getting links from other bloggers. If you startwith a brief list (each point as aphrase or sentence) and then develop each one into a paragraph or two you’ll endup with a series of posts that lasts you a few days.

5. Interviews – Sometimes when you’ve runout of insightful things to say it might be a good idea to let someone else dothe talking in an interview (or a guest post). Thisis a great way to not only give yourreaders a relevant expert’s opinion but to perhaps even learn something aboutthe topic you’re writing yourself. One tip if you’re approaching people for aninterview on your blog – don’t overwhelm them with questions. One of two goodquestions are more likely to get you a response than a long list of poorly thought through ones.

6. Case Studies - Sometimes these are morelike a review post but with some instructional content isadded to them. There are many opportunities to do case studies in differentniches.

7. Profiles – Profile posts aresimilar to case studies but focus in on a particular person. Pick aninteresting personality in your niche and do a little research on them topresent to your readers. Point out how they’ve reached the position they are inand write about the characteristicsthat they have that others in your niche might like to develop to besuccessful.

8. Link Posts - The good old ‘link post’ isa favorite of many bloggers and issimply a matter of finding a quality post on another site or blog and linkingup to it either with an explanation of why you’re linking up, a comment on your take on the topic and/or a quotefrom the post. Of course adding your own comments makes these posts moreoriginal and useful to your readers. The more original content the better butdon’t be afraid to bounce off others in thisway.

9. ‘Problem’ Posts – Another term that is often searched for in Google in conjunction withproduct names is the word‘problems’. This is similar to a review post (above) but focuses moreupon the negatives of a product or service. Don’t write these pieces just forthe sake of them – but if you find a genuine problem with something problemposts can work for you.

10. Contrasting two options – Life is full of decisions between two or more options. Write a postcontrasting two products, servicesor approaches that outlines the positives and negatives of each choice. In asense these are review posts but are a little wider in focus. People actuallysearch for ‘X Product comparison toY Product’ quite a bit.

11. Rant – get passionate, stiryourself up, say what’s on your mindand tell it like it is. Rants aregreat for starting discussion andcausing a little controversy – they can also be quite fun if you do it in theright spirit. Just be aware that they can also be the beginnings of a flamingcomment thread and often it’s in the heat of the moment when we say things thatwe later regret and that can impact our reputation the most.

12. Inspirational - On the flip side to the angry rant (and not all rants have to beangry) are inspirational and motivational pieces. Tell a story of success orpaint a picture of ‘what could be’. People like to hear good news stories intheir niche as it motivates them to persistwith what they are doing. Find examples of success in your own experience orthat of others and spread the word.

13. Research –Research posts can take a lot of time but they can also be wellworth it if you come up with interesting conclusions that inspire people tolink up to you.

14.Collation Posts – These are a strangecombination of research and link posts. In them you pick a topic that you thinkyour readers will find helpful and then research what others have said aboutit. Once you’ve found their opinion you bring together everyone’s ideas (oftenwith short quotes) and tie them together with a few of your own comments todraw out the common themes that you see.

15. Prediction and Review Posts – We see a lot of these at the end and start of the year wherepeople do their ‘year in review’ posts and look at the year ahead and predictwhat developments might happen in their niche in the coming months.

16. Critique Posts – ‘Attack posts’ havealways been a part of blogging. Some people make a name for themselves verywell by attacking others.

17. Debate –Debates do well on blogs and can either in an organized fashion betweentwo people, between a blogger and‘all comers’ or even between a blogger and… themselves (try it – argue both forand against a topic in one post – you can end up with a pretty balanced post).

18. Hypothetical Posts – A ‘what if’ or hypothetical post can be quite fun. Pick asomething that ‘could’ happen down the track in your industry and begin tounpack what the implications of it would be. ‘What if….Google and Yahoomerged?’ ‘What if …’

19. Satirical –Well written satire or parody can be incredibly powerful and is brilliant for generating links for your blog.

20. Memes and Projects - write a post that somehow involves your readers and gets them toreplicate it in someway. Start a poll,an award, ask your readers to submita post/link or run a survey or quiz.

Thisis not an exhaustive list but rather just some of the types of posts thatyou might like to throw into your blog’s mix. Not every one will be suitablefor all blogs or bloggers but using more than one format can definitely add alittle spice and color to a blog. Lastly-- another technique is to mix two or more of the above formats together– there are no rules so have a bit of fun with it! Happy Blogging!

This past July, Amanda Bontempo contacted The New York Website Designer. Amanda is a a registered dietitian and certified dietitian/nutritionist. She was looking to have a website built for that would showcase her nutrition consulting services. She was interested in creating a beautiful site that clearly represents her aesthetics while illustrating that her website and services are an insiders guide and expert advice to all things food. This past October, Adam Jay Miller contacted The New York Website Designer. Adam is a personal nutritionist and holistic healer. He was looking to have a website built for his Holistic Nutrition practice. Since luxury marketers have already lost the tactile sense when using digital marketing, adding sound where it counts can truly help them convince affluent consumers to buy their products, according to experts. Brands that carefully use sound online and in mobile applications can entice consumers to buy products by enveloping them in as many senses as possible to mock an in-person experience. Since touch and smell cannot be used in digital efforts, sound is the most effective.

Ferrari's engine can be heard online

“The more senses that you can engage, the more possibility you have to trace your brand into their mind,” said Jack Burke, president of Sound Marketing Inc., Branson, MO.

“Brands should not use sound gratuitously – there should be a reason and purpose to the sound,” he said. “In many cases, the easiest way for a luxury brand or any brand to engage is with sound used as an informational resource. [Luxury products] are expensive, and it’s a big deal to some people. Sound and educational resources help to engage them and to help them feel comfortable about the decision that they are making.”

Revving up

Marketers who arguably use sound most effectively are automakers. Whether it is with a video of a car zooming by or with a sound of a honk, consumers are better able to visualize the experience of being in a car, even if they are just researching on their computers. For instance, Aston Martin and Ferrari allow consumers to hear many features of the cars on their Web sites.

When consumers click on an Aston Martin vehicle, they are able to choose different sound settings , such as engine start, 0-120 miles-per-hour acceleration, engine revving, drive-by fast and pass by.

Aston Martin also employs this strategy in its Aston Martin Explore mobile app, where consumers can tap on the ignition to hear the engine rev.Additionally, when consumers are taking a virtual tour of a Ferrari on the automaker’s Web site, they can click on the ignition and listen to the car start up.

“I think you have to be really careful about how you incorporate sound into a Web site,” said Andrea Bertola, owner of The New York Website Designer, New York. “There is nothing more jarring than visiting a Web site and jumping five feet out of your chair when the sound unexpectedly blares out of your speakers."

“In retrospect, sound can absolutely enhance a Web site if the user has the option to select it,” she said. “Humans are curious by nature, use it to your advantage.

“You always want your Web site user to feel like they are in control.”

Apparel and accessories designer Ralph Lauren also uses this tactic for his personal interests.

Known car enthusiast Mr. Lauren has dedicated a section of the brand’s Web site to the L’Art de L’Automobile exhibition in France.Consumers can visit the exhibit online and scroll through old-fashioned models from Ferrari, Bugatti, Mercedes-Benz and Bentley. By clicking on the various models, they can hear what the engines sound like when the car starts, when it is driving away and when it is passing nearby. This cycle plays in a loop for each vehicle. Consumers are able to hear what it sounds like when they are both inside and outside of these cars.

Subtle sounds

Luxury marketers other than automakers are creatively tapping sound to enhance digital experience. For instance, Christian Dior is using subtle sound imagery with its Miss Dior Cherie campaign starring actress Natalie Portman.

The brand has a microsite dedicated to the fragrance. When consumers enter it, they are encouraged to “pull” on the bow of a box, tipping it over and spilling its contents.

Consumers can hear the gentle thump of the box hitting the table and hear its contents rolling out.

The process repeats with the sound of more boxes tipping over and a ribbon being pulled, as well as watching and listening to a record roll along the countertop and spinning and settling on the surface.

“Many people are auditory in nature and obtain what they hear more so than what they read,” Sound Marketing’s Mr. Burke said.

“If you put something in writing and have the opportunity to put it in sound or video, then you lose an opportunity to engage with the customer,” he said. “The more senses you engage, the better off you are. That’s the strength of the auditory sense. To not use it is to short-sheet your marketing efforts.”

Indeed, many luxury brands can use sound to evoke the feeling of luxury. For instance, retailers could use the sound of crinkling tissue paper or luxury hotels could play the same gentle music on their Web sites as they do in their lobbies or elevators.

“A good Web site should provide an experience for the user,” New York Website’s Ms. Bertola said. “By indulging their senses, we are able to captivate them on different levels,” she said. “By doing so, the brand is offering a more memorable experience that will leave a lasting impression.”

Custom Christmas Card

Are you looking for custom christmas cards this year? It's not too late! Did you know that Website Designer NYC also offers graphic design services? I'll use my graphic design skills to make a custom christmas card that is unique! No one will have a card like yours!! Check out this project that was just completed. The client provided me with a professional photograph taken of her children this past summer. The challenge was "winterizing" the image to make it seasonal for a holiday card. Here is the original image:

The first step was turning the green grass into a blanket of white snow. The next step was changing some of the details to add a bit of the "Christmas" feeling. The slide was changed to red, the details on the baby's shirt were also changed to red. The most difficult part of this project was changing the rainbow colored lollypops to Christmas colors. Finally, some falling snow was added as well as a festive holiday greeting! Viola! The finished product:

Websites for singers! Are you a singer in search of a custom made website? Your website needs to be as unique as your personality. Laura Parker came to me after reading positive reviews on my Yelp page. She is a professional opera singer that was looking to promote herself with her own custom made website.

Laura wanted to be able to post pictures, resumes, videos and audio clips on her site. Being that I have my masters in Theatre and a background in acting, I knew EXACTLY what Laura needed to be able to market herself in the performing arts. (Websites for actors, websites for singers, and websites for artists are my favorite websites to design!)

We talked about incorporating a blog into her website, so that she could post current news and general "musings". I also mentioned that a blog is the best tool she could use to help her with her search engine rankings! As far as the "look and feel" of her website, Laura wanted a clean, feminine design.
